TAMPA BAY RAYS OPENING DAY
Role: Motion Designer and Art Director
Spectrum Bay News 9

Coverage of the Tampa Bay Rays in the Sports segment for Bay News 9 draws a lot of attention.  An appealing open animation and graphics package was needed to cover news about the team and game highlights for the season.

The envision I had with a 3D baseball traveling to home plate and breaking a bat started with building a realistic looking baseball in Cinema 4D.  From there, I would have to determine how the baseball bat would realistically crack if it were to break from a ball and build those pieces within the 3D application.

The key to this piece however was not only accuracy of the 3D models and perfected compositing of the stadium environment.  The camera work within the 3D scene had to be compelling.  Without proper camera and lighting placement, the scene would fall short.  The camera was placed in a perspective of the ball leaving the pitchers hand and the camera traveling behind the ball as it makes its way to home plate.  The slow motion feel of the bat splitting effect creates a higher dramatic feel and adds to the excitement of the final piece.

Enjoy the results!
